Joseph Brimmer Baker (1896-1981) Joseph Brimmer Baker (1896-1981)
Founder of Baker Equipment

Mr. Baker was Born in Richmond, VA on April 3, 1896 and lived a fruitful life up to his passing away in 1981. He was drafted into the military just before World War I. Later he graduated from Cornell University with a course in Aeronautics, and went to Houston, TX where he received his Lieutenant's Commission as a flying officer. Having saved about $1,400 while in the Air Force, he decided to go into business for himself. Thus he hung the sign in the year 1919, "Equipment for Motor Trucks". Focusing on the Model-T Ford, he offered hoists and bodies in stock for immediate installation. Ready to start selling, Joe Baker called on Eastern State Highway Departments and quickly gained market share. Although the company has changed over the past 90 years, what Joe started in 1919 has remained the best of its kind in the business. A big reason for his success, aside from his keen ingenuity and incredible personality, was his sincere desire to provide customer satisfaction.
